Thinkie study findings presented by Dr. Bianca P. Acevedo, PhD at AAIC 2023.
Dr. Bianca P. Acevedo, PhD of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at University of California, Santa Barbara recently presented study conclusions behind Thinkie’s cutting edge brain training and neurofeedback technology at AAIC 2023. The findings show Thinkie game scores' association with a significant correlation between usage of games, increased brain activity, habituation, and improved cognitive function. The Thinkie group also showed unique improvements in memory and visual memory.
According to Acevedo, “Exploring technology-based practices that may improve cognition and quality of life in aging populations is at the core of my work as a research scientist. If we can target systems involved in the regulation of attention and executive cognition through “brain fitness”, we may find benefits leading to better brain function over time. “
The study was a 4-week, app-based cognitive training and neurofeedback (CT-NF) program, Thinkie (ABC) vs. Tetris (active control). Thinkie uses a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) brain sensor while engaging in CT-NF. Participants completed seven cognitive assessments, pre-and post-intervention, and measured their cortical brain activity as they engaged in the games.
It was noted that study participants wanted to see their improved cognitive function as well as to better understand how to activate the prefrontal cortex. Users commonly experienced peak performance around day 10.
“The results of this study are compelling and should be expanded on in future work.” said Dr. Acevedo. “Through use of a wider variety of games, users may remain challenged longer and therefore continue cognitive and other improvements. Also, screening for older individuals that may tend to show low adherence and need additional computer support will also be an important next step.”
